The Rheidol

The Association has rights on 16 miles on both banks of the Rheidol from the sea to Devil’s Bridge. The river enjoys an international reputation as one of Wales’ premier salmon and sea trout fisheries with double-figure specimens of both species being caught on a regular basis. In Wales you will often find sea trout referred to as sewin.

The river is relatively small, mostly less than 30 metres wide. There are around 30 named and identifiable pools, from the aptly-named “Quarry” Pool to the delightfully named “Troedrhiwlas” Pool. Directions and fishing tips to all pools are given on purchase of the Permit.

Wading can always be dangerous, but is particularly so on the Rheidol which is subject to rapid fluctuations in level when power generating is in operation. Anglers wade at their own risk. The main benefit, however, is that controlled spates take place and good water levels can be found even during a dry summer.

The river has benefited enormously in recent years from work done by the Association in tandem with the Environment Agency and Powergen. In both 2003 and 2005, four thousand salmon parr were released into the Rheidol and feeder streams. These were 12-18 month-old fish bred on from salmon netted in the Rheidol. It is hoped that this pattern will continue into the future.

The text books may advocate night fishing for sea trout but on the Rheidol, if conditions are right, then you have every chance of catching one of these elusive fish during the day. Fly fishing, spinning and worm fishing are all allowed with most locals choosing the method to suit the conditions.

August is the month for the annual run of “pilk” or small sewin which can provide exciting night action although the fish themselves are typically under a pound in weight.

Whatever the time of year, you are guaranteed challenging and rewarding fishing of the highest order.

The Ystwyth

The river that gives its name to Aberystwyth. Aber in Welsh means mouth of: hence Aberystwyth, mouth of the Ystwyth. A true spate river where levels can fluctuate dramatically. Like the Rheidol, it has a late Summer/Autumn run of salmon but it is the sewin which is the jewel in the crown of both rivers. The Association has fishing rights on the lower reaches below Gosen Bridge, Rhydyfelin, a few miles south of Aberystwyth and reachable on the A44 towards Cardigan.

Catch and Release Advice

The E.A. is keen to promote catch and release in Wales as typically 75% of rod caught salmon are killed every year. The long term impact on our already fragile fisheries can be imagined. We appreciate that for many anglers just catching a salmon is a major achievement but when it happens, why not release this beautiful creature and look forward to seing it again in a few years time? With this in mind here are a few tips on catch and release:-
1. Avoid handling, lifting or removing the fish from the river as much as possible.
2. Use lures that enable a quick release-unbarbed singles or doubles, not trebles.
3. Play out the fish in the shortest time possible.
4. If it looks like the hook cannot be removed safely, don't waste time. Cut the line as close to the hook as possible and release the fish.

Protect our future-practice catch and release
